Strength for cyclists

The case for cyclists in the weight room, and the structured strength work that makes you faster and more robust without unwanted mass, in Soho, London.

Strength for Cyclists

For years cyclists were told to stay out of the gym in case strength work made them heavy and slow. The evidence has moved on, and so should your training. Structured strength is one of the most reliable ways to raise the force you can put through the pedals, protect your position, and keep your body resilient enough to train hard, season after season.

Strength for cyclists is not bodybuilding and it is not general gym work. We programme it around your power-to-weight goals, so you develop force where it makes you faster without piling on mass you do not want. It is coached, not just supervised, with technique corrected in every set and load applied by progressive overload. The result is a rider who is stronger, more durable, and harder to drop.

What's involved

  • A movement and strength assessment so load is matched to your real starting capacity
  • Compound strength work coached for technique, intent, and full range
  • Strength built in proportion to your power-to-weight goals, not raw size
  • Posterior-chain, trunk, and single-leg work for the demands of the bike
  • Progressive overload, periodised so the strength serves your riding

Common
questions

Should cyclists lift weights?

Yes. The old worry that strength work makes riders slow has not held up. Programmed for cycling and kept in proportion to your power-to-weight goals, strength training raises the force you can produce and builds the resilience to keep training. For most riders it is one of the highest-return things they can add.

Will I get bulky and lose power-to-weight?

Not when it is programmed properly. We build strength where it makes you faster, not size for its own sake, and keep it in proportion to your power-to-weight goals. Most riders get noticeably stronger with little change in weight, because the work targets force production, not mass.

I have never lifted. Where do I start?

With the fundamentals, coached from your first session. Most riders we work with are not experienced lifters, so the programme starts wherever you are and builds technique first. You train safely from the start rather than against a standard you are somehow expected to already meet.
